The Janome 8002D Serger
If you are in the market for a new serger, Janome sergers should definitely be on your list for machines to consider. The Janome 8002D is one such machine that packs many serging features into its small, compact frame.
The Janome 8002D features a sturdy design that also allows for precise stitching so you can be sure to get a beautiful result from its 3 or 4 thread operation.
This great machine also offers a rolled hem feature that is built into the machine; you don’t even need to change your needle plate. It gives your projects a professional finish. All you need to do is slide your plate over into the R position for a rolled hem – and that’s it.
The Janome 8002D makes it easy to thread your machine with its easy-to-read threading chart that also comes color-coded for your convenience and ease. You don’t need to worry about noise either – this machine is almost whisper-quiet for a serger, even when sewing up to 1300 spm.
Cutting is made easier with an adjustable cutting width of 3.1 mm up to 7.3 mm and a retractable upper knife. You are also offered a dial for left/right needle thread tension and a dial for upper/lower thread tension.
For your convenience, the presser feet snap on and you are provided with a thread guide as well as a thread cutter.

Love it!
I was looking for an easy to use but cost efficient serger for my first serger. I initially bought a Brother on Amazon. It was horrible, didn't work but for an inch of serging at a time before something would mess up. It broke after the third attempt to use it. This machine has not given me any trouble at all. It is a little complicated to thread the lower looper but once you figure out how to do it, it works great. I bought mine from a local sewing shop that gives a free lesson for your new machine so once they showed me how to thread the machine, I've been fine. This seems to be a newer model of the machine and there aren't many youtube video tutorials, etc for if you want assistance on how to do something specific. I have been able to figure it out through trial and error without a problem though.

Janome 8002D Serger
I've owned three sergers and the Janome is the best of the lot. Their quality control is better than most. My other sergers arrived with the tension disks preset to their optimum setting, but the setting were all over the place. No attempt had been made to adjust the machines so that there was consistency in relation to each other. So the lower looper was at 7 and the upper looper at 3 and the right needle at 5 and the left needle at 8. Huh? The Janome tension disks were uniformly set at 3 -- all of them. And it was the correct tension. The machine has worked flawlessly. BUT, the lower looper thread is difficult to get through its path, and it doesn't get better because the problem is that it is difficult to reach, not understand. I'd buy the Janome 8002D again because it works so well, but I might first search for a Janome model that is easier to thread.

Great machine (and quieter too)
The Janome 8002D is a quiet machine and it works great! It didn't come with a lot of accessories but I don't mind. I have a Janome sewing machine which I really love so I know that Janome is a good brand. I initially bought a Brother 1134DW from Costco and this machine is LOUD or much much louder than the Janome 8002D. The 1134DW came with several sewing feet and a bunch of accessories but I found myself cringing everytime I used the machine because of the noise so it had to go back

Takes the fear out of serging for 1st timers!
My very first serger and I love it. I've been intimidated to use serger's in the past but with some encouragement from a sewing friend and advice, I decided to give it a try. My first project after reading the manual first was to attempt a 3-thread rolled hem with a different color thread and needless to say, it was easy to follow the manual to adjust to "rolled hem" and to change the thread color simply by knotting and passing through the machine. The thread guides are easy to read and so far this machine is being nice to me.

So Far So Good
I have been contemplating a serger for at least three months and have read plenty of reviews. Truthfully everyone directs you towards the entry level Brother, which is a great product but knowing the quality of Janome, I really wanted one. So far I have not been disappointed at all. The serger comes pre-threaded with white thread, of course I wanted to finish something in black so instead of doing the "easy way" of threading (tying off on the previous threads), I decided to thread the machine myself. The DVD is great to have since I loaded in my laptop and was able to pause and rewind on demand as I was figuring out how to thread the machine. I only had difficulty threading one of the loopers (the Upper Looper thread) but eventually was able to successfully thread all four cones and start serging. I love the serger! it's easy to use, easy to adjust the double knifes are extremely sharp (first project was with denim), and amazingly quiet (at least to me). I highly recommend this machine as an entry level serger. I have recently begun to sew (only about six months ago) and very much enjoy doing clothing - I think that if that's your primary objective with sewing, a serger is a must.

First serger ever purchased and used. I love how easy it is to use. Sturdy construction, you can tell it is built to last! Comes with a wonderful CD with instructions that are very descriptive. Highly recommend!
