    Unfortunately there is NO substitute. It is what it is, and is a very necessary part of the Brother Scan N Cut machine. I checked prices in a few sources and all were reasonably comparable. Unfortunately in my area there are no Brother retailers with in 75 miles, Amazon's rapid shipping was the next best thing!
