Old School? Works Great
My wife is a professional seamstress of several years experience. She now works in sort of a "hobby job" at a local dress and alterations shop. Last fall I bought her a Janome DC2011 electronic machine, but she was dragging that back and forth between home and work, so I bought her this machine for Christmas to keep at work. She loves her fancy DC2011 more, I guess, but she says this machine sews every bit as well within the limitations of its fewer available stiches. She uses it usually 5 days a week. It sews through both thin material and through several layers of denim without any problem. Her boss also tried it and was impressed. I'm a mechanical type of guy, and this mechanical machine was what I wanted to buy her in the first place... I guess I neatly solved the problem by buying her both machines. One thing I noticed myself was that the carry handle on this HD1000 is a lot sturdier feeling than on the DC2011. If you plan to carry your machine much, that could be a consideration.

Fantastic for Plain Heavy Duty Sewing
I have used this machine for several Renassiance costume projects and some light upholstery. The more I use this machine the more impressed I am with it. I have been sewing for almost 50 years to make anything from everyday clothing to heavy costume vests and skirts to heavy upholstery fabrics on various brands of machines. I was looking for a versatile machine to handle sheers to heavy upholstery fabrics. I do not use alot of decorative stitching but wanted to be able to do stretch stitches and zig zag. The Janhome really fits my needs. It can be a bit picky going from thin to thick seams but I have learned to adjust my handling to compensate.

Very well built
This sewing machine is well built, like the older 'sears' units of the 70's. Well worth every penny, especially if you work with thicker materials that cause other sewing machines to bog down, or miss the bobbin. I took a look inside it, and all the mechanical parts are solid and precision fit as well.

AWESOME MACHINE
This is a world class sewing machine for home use. My wife has fixed everything with it. She used it to make her own wedding dress. She used it to make baby clothes for our granddaughter. It just keeps on keeping on. No household job too small or too tough.

Nice machine
Bought this for my wife, she does a large amount of sewing. After refurbishing her 30 yr. old Singer numerous times it was starting to get a glitz again so we decided to put it on stand by and look for another machine. After some research I came up with the Janome. Neither of us had heard of it but reading about the company that makes it decided to give it a try. My wife says the Janome works nice and it is a heavy duty machine so it may hold up pretty good, we hope. Can't give more specifics other than I'm not hearing any negatives from her and she knows sewing machines. Looks to be well made and engineered.

Giggling with delight!
I had never heard of Janome but I ordered this item based on the lack of negative reviews. My wife has been using an older Kenmore which, even after being in the shop, continued to give her problems. This lead to several many episodes of cursing and ripping and tearing of both fabric and hair. A couple of days after the Christmas madness had settled she unboxed the new machine and after skimming the instruction book began to sew. I must tell you that if I had not been in the room, I would have thought there was another man in there with her. Such oohs and ahhs and squeals of delight, not to mention the adoring looks that she passed my way. Needless to say, it was a big hit. After several small projects it is working perfectly and she is more that pleased which in turn, makes my life so much better.

A work horse!
Very simple to use - no extra "bells & whistles" that just end up tearing up. Mostly metal, all mechanical with no electronics, which means it should last longer. One disadvantage is that you have to remove the attachment tray every time you change bobbin colors, meaning I just end up leaving it off. It is rather fragile feeling anyway and will probably be the first thing to break. The rest of the machine feels very sturdy. I wish the top thread spool holders were metal, I'm sure they will break off soon, especially if you transport the machine a lot. The blind hem stitching foot and the zipper foot are amazing and simple to use.
