    Very Good Machine

Posted by JW Needleworker on 10th May 2018

We bought this machine as a gift for the pastors wife because she has such a desire to learn to sew. I had the opportunity last week to teach her how to use it and I found it to be an excellent machine. I did have to adjust the bobbin tension, but once I did it sewed beautiful stitches. I use a semi-industrial machine that sews only a straight stitch for quilting, so I might buy one for myself! This is a very well-built, heavy-duty machine, and seems to be made with strong metal materials and it should last more than a lifetime if you keep it clean and oil as you should. Excellent price also!

Stop looking for a better deal or machine

Posted by Tom A Willis on 10th May 2018

A damn fine machine. It does have a slight problem with more than 3 layers of denim. Simple to use though. I don't know what all the fuss seems to be about with the way the bobbin goes in. Bobbin thread foul ups are a lot easier to overcome with this machine that others I own with a "top" loading bobbin. If you want a great simple machine without a lot of bells and whistles this is it.

Solid machine, more like older machines than fancy new ones.

Posted by Pan on 10th May 2018

This sewing machine is a solid workhorse that reminds me of the machines that I learned to sew on. If you want frills than this machine is not for you. It lacks a lot of the fancy features that a lot of other machines have; dozens of stitches, automatic thread cutter, digital display, etc. I actually chose this machine because it lacked those things as in my experience the more frills a machine has the more problems you will have to deal with. For people like me who mostly do basic-ish garment sewing, in other words only use 3 or 4 stitches out of the 14 available on this machine, it has everything you would need. It has a solid body that is mostly metal. If you plan on hauling your machine around to classes or meets, this may be a bit heavy for some. I don't really mind the weight. It definitely stays put on the table. The controls being manual and simple are easy to use, and I have had no problems so far after almost 2 years. The light is nice and bright. The foot pedal is lovely. It's not tiny, and allows good control of speed. The bobbin winder is amazing. It works really really well. Threading this machine is pretty easy, especially compared to many other modern machines. Anyone who learned to sew on machines from the 70's into the early 90's will feel right at home with this sewing machine. I sure did. The only negatives, and they are all things I can live with, are 1. I wish that there were more length settings. 2. A top loading bobbin would have been nice 3. I wish there were a bit more space between the foot and the plate. Overall, it is a great machine. It is not the cheapest machine out there, and some might be tempted to write it off based on a list of features other machines offer, but this machine is a great value for the price. It is a machine made to last.

I decided to go back to the sturdy basics. Sure enough

Posted by Sharon Lee on 9th May 2018

After my latest Singer quit on me, I was fed up with finicky diva-style sewing machines. When I saw the Janome HD1000sew through all that denim in the video, as well as the yardstick, and read the reviews, I decided to go back to the sturdy basics. Sure enough, the Janome HD1000 zipped right through hemming my jeans into capris, then raced right through sewing together nylon webbing on a backpack with nary a complaint or hesitation. Now THAT'S how machinery is supposed to perform! Very easy to thread , operate, etc.---same as my earlier real metal machine back in the 60's and 70's. It has all the stitches and variations I will ever use. Most of those dozens of stitches offered on frilly machines are never used; nobody decorates their pillowcases like Eastern European peasants anymore, and no grandchild will thank you for crafty touches on their clothes---you will only embarrass them in front of their peers. Now I can't wait to tackle that accumulated mountain of quilting pieces. I had given up trying to coax my old machine to handle them. The Janome machine is streamlined and easy on the eyes, too. I have recommended my new machine to all my sewing friends.

    Great Machine

Posted by Phyllis Brode on 9th May 2018

I bought this machine about a year ago and had not taken it out of the box because I was using my basic Kenmore and basically was too lazy to switch over. Then I was not sewing as much, life got busy and kind of forgot I had it in my sewing closet. This past Christmas (2013) my daughter (on a whim and because it was a good deal) bought me a Singer Heritage machine, computerized and beautiful. I began sewing on it - was much better than the Kenmore but almost felt too lightweight. However, I loved the automated tension adjustment and ease of stitching. But then needed to make a buttonhole. That particular option would not work and much to my complete and utter disappointment, there is NO recourse for obtaining help except to go to the Singer web-site and watch the video that does not address how to make a buttonhole much less how to troubleshoot. There are NO contact numbers and one is basically left with nothing in place to address such problems. I boxed up the Singer and pulled out my Janome and it was the best machine I've EVER sewn on (I've been sewing about 45 years.) The machine is solid, heavy and stitching is sure. Everything about this machine is sound - it even sounded more substantial than the others. I just finished my first buttonhole on the Janome and it was a breeze and took me less than 5 minutes. And to think I've had the machine in my closet for about 3 years! <kicking myself in the butt> The machine is a wonderful machine. No fancy bells and whistles but enough extras to handle most sewing projects. There are also numerous youtube videos for operation and the manual is concise and easy to understand. I'm looking forward to many years of operation with this machine.

    Doesn't work on denim

Posted by KHK on 9th May 2018

Great sawing machine without extra stitches that you will never use anyway. Easy to adjust because it's not computerized and you know what you are doing. One big minus it's not strong enough to stitch denim. And you won't be even able to stitch it even if you try manually turn the wheel. So, if you are looking for a machine that can stitch denim, look for a different one

    Good Machine for the Money

Posted by L Turk on 8th May 2018

I've kicked the crap out of this machine and it still works. I've used it to sew fabrics from ripstop nylon to canvas and it has performed well. I did cause a problem with the engagement clutch on the wheel. I over tightened it once and it hasn't been quite the same since. Taking it apart did fix the problem of it not disengaging. Other than that one hiccup, which was my fault, it has performed admirably.

    Terrific Machine!

Posted by Amy on 7th May 2018

LOVE my Janome HD 1000!!! I own a sewing business and work on a lot of machines. This machine is a beast. It is heavy duty and can go through anything with great stitches. It doesn't have any gimmicks but that's part of the reason I like it. It's just an old fashion machine that works beautifully. Out of all my machines I usually pick my Janome! :)
