The History of Bernette

Bernette is a subsidiary of Bernina International. Bernina was founded in 1893 in Steckborn, Switzerland, by Fritz Gegauf, an inventor fascinated with improving the sewing machine. This fascination led him to create the first ever hemstitch sewing machine. This machine was capable of stitching 100 stitches per minute, significantly more than other machines of the time period.

Today, Bernina is well regarded for its Bernette line of machines, which were designed by Gegauf's daughter during her stint as the head of Bernina. These machines have garnered a sterling reputation for their affordable price and wide range of features, which include everything from sergers to computerization.
