How Much Should a Beginner Sewing Machine Cost?

Have you always wanted to trying sewing but didn’t know what you should pay for a beginner sewing machine? With so many features and options available, shopping for a sewing machine can be a daunting task. Prices of sewing machines can range from less than $200 to thousands of dollars — so how do you know what price range is right for you as a beginner sewer?

In this article, we will cover several options so you can make the best-informed decision on a beginner sewing machine.

Ready to learn more? Here we’ll discuss some questions you should consider before making a purchase decision:

  • What features do you need in a beginner sewing machine?
  • What brands should you consider for a quality sewing machine?
  • What is your budget?

What Features Do You Need in a Beginner Sewing Machine?

First, think through what features you need in a good beginner sewing machine and what features you want.

Stitches

Unless you are planning on doing embroidery or using other decorative stitches, you likely won’t need any stitches other than a straight stitch and a zigzag stitch. These will allow you to sew both woven and knit fabrics with great results! We highly recommend that you make sure that any sewing machine you buy has both zigzag and straight stitch options. It’s also important that the machine lets you adjust the stitch length and width for the fabric you are sewing.

Any other stitches are optional since you can sew just about anything with only those two basic stitches. But some additional stitch options can make your life easier. For example, if the sewing machine you are considering has a one-step buttonhole stitch, then sewing buttonholes will be a breeze!

Another stitch that you may find useful if you plan to sew a lot of knits is a “stretch stitch” — it looks like a little lightning bolt. You can use a zigzag stitch for stretchy fabrics, but often the stretch stitch gives a nicer result and requires less stitch adjustment.

Feet

You may be tempted to buy a sewing machine that comes with a huge selection of specialty presser feet, but it’s not necessary for a beginner sewer. The only feet that you’ll probably use regularly are a standard presser foot, a zipper foot and a buttonhole foot.

If you sew a lot of knits, you may also want a walking foot, which will help the fabric flow smoothly through the machine. However, keep in mind that you can shop around and buy any presser feet you might want later for an affordable price — they don’t have to come with the sewing machine.

Other Features

Another feature that you’ll want in a beginner sewing machine is lighting! A built-in LED light that illuminates the work surface when you turn the machine on will make sewing and threading the machine so much easier.

You may also want to consider purchasing a machine that has a speed control dial or lever. Especially as a beginner sewer, you will find it helpful to be able to slow the stitch speed down so you can keep your stitching straight. Think of it as pumping the brakes on a car.

What Brands Should You Consider for a Quality Machine?

There are many models of inexpensive, beginner sewing machines out there that may be tempting. However, I would highly recommend sticking with a reputable brand to help ensure that the sewing machine you are getting will be a quality machine that will last for many years of regular use.

It will be your best bet to stay away from those super inexpensive, portable sewing machines that cost less than $100. The quality is not there, and they are usually quite frustrating to sew with and don’t hold up to frequent use.

More reputable sewing machine brands that you can trust to produce quality sewing machines include Singer, Brother, Pfaff, Janome, Juki and Bernette. All these brands produce great machines that can hold up to long-time regular use and typically come with a solid warranty that covers parts and labor. In addition to choosing a quality brand, be sure to purchase your sewing machine from a reputable seller.

What Is Your Budget?

Finally, the most important factor in your decision is your budget! Your very first beginner sewing machine purchase is often not the time to drop over $1000 on a fancy machine. You will first want to complete a few projects and learn some basic skills before moving to the next level.

We would recommend spending between $200 and $350 for a great beginner sewing machine that can last for years to come. You’ll be able to use the machine to produce lots of great projects — whether you’re sewing bags, clothing, quilts or home decor — and you’ll learn how and what you like to sew in the process. Then if you decide you want to upgrade in a few years, you can always sell your beginner sewing machine and invest in one with additional features.
